PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the Altimira E-Alert! This online version of our newsletter will be updated frequently, so please check it often for the latest news. The standard paper version of the Altimira Alert will be printed and mailed home four (4) times a year, fall(Oct/Nov/Dec), winter (Jan/Feb), spring (Mar/Apr/May), and summer (May/June). We are attempting to cut costs and reduce paper usage by reducing the number of paper editions that we publish and send home. Another benefit of having the newsletter online, is that we can regularly update it and you can view it online as often as you like.
AMS students can look forward to numerous opportunities for fun and for learning over the next three months. With Open House, STAR testing, Finals Week and Field Day on the horizon, we will indeed be busy until June 3rd.
Our 8th graders are already getting nervous and excited about moving on to high school. In order to support our 8th graders more thoroughly, Opportunity to Improve for academics has begun. Approximately 45 8th grade students are receiving extra help before or after school twice a week. The program focuses on study skills and goal setting as well as academic support. Mrs. Murray, Mr. Reis, Mr. Bolin (OTI Teachers) and Mrs. Tommasi (Academic Coordinator) have all reported that the program is quite successful so far and students are very receptive to the support. If you would like your 8th grader to participate in the OTI for academics program, please contact Mrs. Tommasi, our AMS Academic Coordinator.
In order to support our continuing efforts to increase academic rigor at Altimira and prepare students for the transition to high school, we will be implementing a Finals Week from May 24th through May 27th. We want our students to experience final exams that are similar to the exams given at Sonoma Valley High School. We also want to ensure that students are in an academic environment until the last day of school. Additionally, we will focus on Academic Vocabulary (Word of the Week) again this spring at AMS. Understanding Academic Vocabulary is critical for our students. Academic Vocabulary is a term that describes words that are most commonly used in school and other academic settings. If students do not know these words, they can not comprehend what they are being asked to do on the STAR test, in text books and other assignments. Academic Vocabulary includes words like, "analyze", "compare", "contrast", "estimate", "interpret", and "significant".

This spirited competition is an opportunity for 21 local "celebrities" and community leaders, backed by a group of our district's brightest public school 5th Graders, to vie for what will surely be a coveted trophy along with bragging rights as 2010 Champion! In this fun and friendly game show contestants will answer questions from the 5th Grade California State Standards in Math, Science, Social Studies and English during three elimination rounds and a final round. After the competition, our guests and contestants will enjoy great music, casual food and refreshments.

Our new student data base program, Power School, is up and running. You should have received information on your student's Progress Report regarding the process for accessing the Power School Parent Portal. We have provided a link for you to use to access the Power School Parent Portal on this website under the "News" tab. You can check your child's attendance, grades and communicate with your child's teachers. If you are having trouble accessing the Power School Parent Portal, feel free to contact our main office at 935.6020 and we can assist you.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
AMS needs your help! We would love parent volunteers to help us in the following ways...
Before school - if you can spare 30 minutes to an hour on a regular basis, we would love some, "extra eyes", on our campus from 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning.
Library - if you can spare 30 minutes on a regular basis, our librarian would love some, "extra hands", in the library.

Student drop-off and pick up is only allowed in the front of the front of the school; no cars are allowed in the Bus Circle and no student drop-off or pick-up is allowed in the staff parking lots. Please see page 5 of the AMS Student/Parent Handbook for more information.
Parents and all other visitors must register and obtain a visitor's sticker in the Main Office every time they visit the campus. Please see page 2 of the AMS Student/Parent Handbook for more information.
Students must comply with the SVUSD Middle & High Schools Dress Code daily. Please remind your student and ensure that he/she is dressed appropriately before leavign for school each morning. Please see pages 10 & 11 of the AMS Student/Parent Handbook for more information.
